The Real Value of a Protonmail Visionary Lifetime Account

The REAL price of Protonmail Lifetime Visionary

The Protonmail $10,000 Lie — it’s Visionary.

Protonmail is an excellent email service, but it’s not worth 10k.

Take a look at my account, and you will see I’m someone who cares a great deal about privacy. I always have and will.

So when I ran across a campaign on Idigogo for something called Protonmail, I was ecstatic.

I wanted the best perk.

Lifetime ProtonMail+

You understand that society has spoken, and privacy IS the future and is here to stay.

You get Instant Access and a Lifetime Subscription to ProtonMail+ for email AND any other privacy services we launch, including mobile, chat, and file storage! PLUS a T-shirt and a special gift from CERN, the birthplace of ProtonMail.

it’s called Lifetime ProtonMail+

Andy yen, Jason Stockman and Wei Sun used a funding grant

Jason Stockman under the legal name Proton Technologies AG to strart this company.

I’m an original backer of Protonmail who never received the listed pledge. I’d say “Visionary account,” but that’s wrong.

So you see, I paid for a visionary account and never received the perk.

Instead, I gained an “account to be opened” and created a protonmail account before they were ready.

I never got any update that protonmail created my account, I never got my shirt, and I never gt any notice from Protonmail. I did, however, get charged.

A while later, I paid again to create a username, this time through BTC, I believe?

The campaign was over this time, and protonmail itself offered “beta invites” where you essentially paid to create an account. I still wanted one, so I paid for and chose a custom name fitting my start-up of the time. That account was created without Lifetime ProtonMail+ access. But then I found out I had ONLY paid for the username itself on a free edition account!

When I attempted to find the information for this, I was unable to. There was no supporting documentation on the protonmail website at the time concerning converting accounts. The only supporting document is this one https://protonmail.com/blog/indiegogo/

The Indegogo email I had was registered to lava bit, another privacy email service. You might start to see the trouble I’ve had in locating my account now.

What I suspect is just how I was having issues sending emails from Protonmail (they were going directly to spam). I think Indogogo charged me and voided the account transaction due to the email used.

I don’t know. The details are lost in time. I never realized precisely how important the service would become, and while it was in the back of my mind, I was too pig-headed to reach out for support.

Life went on, and I somewhat forgot about my Lifetime ProtonMail+ account.

Protonmail stuck in my mind, and I kept an eye on it, but I never registered a support ticket due to it just not being a big enough issue at the time.

Like the campaign itself had started at a lower level of ‘Supporter.”

“You understand why internet privacy is important for protecting freedom and you want to help create a better world.”

sometime later, I got an email

https://protonmail.ch/privacyforall

To celebrate our 1 year anniversary, we are upgrading all accounts created by June 17th, 2015, to 1GB of free storage! Many of you have also asked for a way to share ProtonMail with friends and family. To do that, we have created a special link that allows instant account creation: https://protonmail.ch/privacyforall

I was… confused and a tiny bit annoyed. After all, I was supposed to have a ProtonMail+ account already.

Then I learned Protonmail disabled signups due to high demand. Nice!. people were to go to https://protonmail.ch/invite

By the way, I’m not the only one who was running into issues with signups

see

https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/33uwcw/best_free_email_service_for_privacy/

comment “Doubtful, I signed up two months ago, never got an invite.”

I also sent BTC to protonmail. Although the timeline of this is unclear.

Later on, Reddit people were discussing Protonmail

https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/2alefv/protomail_is_a_free_endtoend_encrypted_email/

“Ah yes, I couldn’t remember their name. I remembered them and Autistici/Inventati when I first created this post. “Unfortunately, ProtonMail is invite-only, and their invite request seems to imply there’s a wait involved. Meanwhile, A/I is more of an “application” process.”

Then on November 3rd, 2015, Protonmail started encountering a six-day DDoS Attack

https://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/us/security/news/cyber-attacks/protonmail-incident-do-not-pay-cybercriminals

Protonmail paid a six thousand dollar ransom, and the attackers went through with their plan anyway. Youch.

I perked up at this and the later events with eBay freezing accounts.

Boy, I sure am glad I never got my account! I told myself to numb the disappointment of not having access.

Protonmail would continue to flow in and out of my consciousness for years.

I eat a plate of privacy with my coffee in the mornings, so it was fate that I would become keenly aware of Protonmail’s various happenings.

The monthly message limit on all accounts had been increased to 1000,

One thing I particularly remember is the Freedom is a human right statement by Protonmail

https://protonmail.com/blog/protesters-free-speech/

And finally, the name changes.

Lifetime ProtonMail+ would become identified as protonmail visionary

Protonmail does not mention this. Their documents break the plans down into free, paid, Professional, and Visionary

There seem to be no references to the previously used name ‘’Protonmail+.’’

https://protonmail.com/support/knowledge-base/paid-plans/

‘’ProtonMail Visionary is our top-tier individual (and family) plan. It gets its name from a group of crowdfunding contributors who donated significant funds in 2014 to make ProtonMail possible in the first place.’’

Hi! *waves*!

Very interestingly, it is Protonmail themselves who convinced me not to push the issue further

“There are more difficult to use, but more secure solutions out there, which are more appropriate for Snowden’s use case.”

This answer is not wrong, but not one I wanted to read, and coming from Lavabit concerned me.

In 2017 I almost signed up for FastMail.

But I never did after seeing some concerning statements. I also found it ironic that for a service with the name Fast, one of its complaints was the slow use of the reply button.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15853477

Instead, I went with something called Lavaboom.

That was smart, yes? No, not at all. Lava boom went boom. You would think one would learn from lava bit.

We are two services that have shut down into the trenches and one that never gave what was purchased. To say that I was wary of paying for Protonmail at this point is an understatement.

I also took issue with the transparency report

https://protonmail.com/blog/transparency-report/ which states

Since protonmail itself is swiss, and a recent referendum severely weakened their privacy law, the Swiss government can now monitor all cross-border traffic without a warrant. Unfortunately, Protonmail did not accurately portray this information, although it looks like the document has been updated.

Additionally, Protonmail posted a blog about this

https://protonmail.com/blog/swiss-surveillance-law/

When protonmail VPN was introduced, I knew I was missing out.

I realized that my indigogo account would have given me lifetime access to

“Visionary”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6TcQX-IMss

I’m unsure when Protonmail rebranded their plans names, but protonmail was phrased into 24.00/mo for visionary accounts.

I admit this had my attention. I suspected then, and this was later confirmed, that Protonmail would be making their edition of a dropbox-Esque style file system.

As of today, I have no access to that system. It’s okay, I told myself.

There are three reasons I never used protonmail VPN.

1: distaste that I didn’t have access to it in the first place

2: they used RSA as key exchange.

3: I already had a VPN

In a very now-deleted Reddit post, someone airs their complaints about Protonmail, a post that Protonmail themselves responded to every single point.

https://www.removeddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/6ru9pf/ive_had_enough_of_protonmail_heres_why/dl8irqq/

One of them was concerning the https://protonmail.com/blog/transparency-report/

‘’We have come to the conclusion that overall, it would actually be better for ProtonMail to serve as the judge.’’

‘’I hope you don’t really mean that. The legal system is there for a reason, and as an email provider, the legal decisions should not be made by you.’’

In February 2017, we received notification from the Geneva prosecutor’s office regarding an impending data request from overseas that will come with a valid International Letters Rogatory. The most probable data requester is US law enforcement. Update: The request is from the US Department of Justice in a case of extortion against a prominent advisory firm. After reviewing the relevant evidence forwarded by US authorities, criminal intent was apparent, so Proton Technologies AG decided to comply with the data request, to the extent that it is possible, given our cryptography.

As mentioned, the post is deleted. It’s possible the poster was satisfied with the answers given and cleared their account. Protonmail did, after all, respond in kind and update their policy.

“Furthermore, what we are discussing above is not how we currently operate. Today, a court order is always required, end of the story.”

Situations like these kept me away because I believe privacy-focused email services should comply with the law and not attempt to enforce orders.

However, this event should never have happened.

Protonmailis not a legal judge, and while it’s good that moving forward a court order is required, this is, in my eyes, a blemish on the company. Bad history from before current protocols, but history that happened nonetheless. It may seem harsh or unfair to rectify past actions, but if Protonmail wants to be a secure service, they need constructive criticism. Like spideroak did.

The proton mail VPN made people take notice.

The initial cost of a “visionary account” back then would have saved someone several hundred dollars if they only used email and VPN.

One such discussion that I’ve searched hard for with no results is between a protonmail employee and Reddit folks.

paraphrasing the conversation went like this

“What’s the difference between self-hosting and using protonmail?”

the person then went on to say that they could start their domain in Switzerland, charge people for the use of email, and make their own company. That question never got a reply from the protonmail team.

The thing is, they were right. Protonmail was at the time of that question just a scrappy company posted on IndieGoGo. They just had a vision, and thankfully they executed it flawlessly. Now they had a VPN. Now people were slowly starting to take notice.

It takes an adjustment to the mind to think of paying for email services. Companies like Google make it so easy to rade your date for services. 50GB of iCloud data for IOS costs 0.99, so why would anyone pay?

Those who use protonmail and like-minded services know the real reason.

If you’re not paying for the product you are the product.

Protonmail protonmail protonmail!

As a security-minded guy, I would run into this service again and again.

protonmail, the scrappy email client that crashed my web browser, would continue to hone its services and options. I remember before protonmail had an app. Now they were a polished website, app, and successful VPN. Slowly it was becoming less hard to say over the phone.

Oh! did you say .com?

Not .com .ch there is no .com

protonmailch.com ?

No. *sigh* where is no .com. it ends in .ch, which is a Switzerland domain

ohhhhh! (pretending to understand nothing at all)

did you say.. .ch.com?

No. no, I did not.

Protonmail now offers a .com domain. I wonder what on earth could have prompted that?

We are offering ProtonMail Lifetime Accounts for Black Friday! They are available until Nov 28. This is the first time we have offered these special…

From Black Friday until Cyber Monday, we are making ProtonMail Lifetime Accounts available again!

https://protonmail.com/blog/black-friday/

As you may already know, ProtonMail Visionary is our highest paid tier (priced at 288€ per year) and comes with a number of special benefits, including:…

So apparently, I missed an opportunity to buy a Lifetime ProtonMail+ account.

The name visionary comes from ProtonMail history, from the original crowdfunding campaign that made ProtonMail possible. During that time, a select number of individuals donated for the Visionary level, which contributed a significant amount of funds to kickstart the project. Even today, many of our Visionary level users are upgrading just to support ProtonMail.

Then a very familiar statement

https://protonmail.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/protonmail_lifetime_account.png

Click.

I never paid $997

I must have picked a lower tier and not realized it, or more likely, and the IndieGoGo site bugged out due to some privacy measure used. So I paid for some other tier and got charged, but purchasing created no account Protonmail must have never reached out because…uhh… maybe they were still building the services? I Don’t know, and the details were lost.

It doesn’t matter. There’s blood in the water now.

I decided there, staring at the price, that I would grab the next opportunity if there ever were one. Especially after thinking, I had one, waiting for it to be active and only finding out the truth years later, I would be laser-focused on any news.

Welcome to Black Friday.

Protonmail Lifetime Accounts are listed!!!!

They are gone by the time I get the notice.

I’m staring at the screen, saying no accounts are available.

But then.

Protonmail posts an update

Earlier this morning, ProtonMail Lifetime Accounts sold out 12 hours after we made them available.

Update — November 27, 2016: ProtoMail Lifetime Accounts sold out again this morning. However, we are still in the process of notifying users about this offering. Thus, to give everyone an equal opportunity to obtain a Lifetime Account, we will raise the limit on the number of Lifetime Accounts until all notifications are sent.

This time I am aware, ready card in hand. I was punching in the numbers, ready to purchase an account for 1,579.07. Card declined.

Nooooo, it’s there.

I call the bank.

What happened next led to me quitting that bank. They locked my account for fraud and would not allow me to get any answers. Yes, I am spending a grand on email service. Yes, this is an authorized transaction…

Hurry uppppppp.!!!

Huh? did you suspend my account? What?!

I reloaded the website and watched the counter while explaining to my bank, who had decided I was involved in illegal activities.

In the end, it was too late. However, I wasn’t the only one waiting for an account, it seems.

They were gone.

I didn’t know if proton would ever relist those accounts.

Most likely not. But I decided to keep watching just in case.

Maybe one day.

Fun fact. I am really sick of deleting emails about the “Ancel FX4000 ABS SRS IMMO BMS ESP Car Engine Scanner Full System Diagnostic Tool,” which shows up as a search query for “protonmail” this is because it’s a “fit for proton” s Malaysia’s first car manufacturer that was established in 1983. How many random photos and tidbits about this vehicle have I seen, you ask? Thousands.

Did you know proton withdrew from the UK in 2014? (the car) have you heard about the Proton Cars Parts Owners Club UK + WorldWide Race Rally? I sure have! Did you know the ionizer filter is located under the center armrest? I do!

How would you like an interior walkthrough of the Proton X50 1.5TGDi? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTPFivIuRto Ooo shiny!

For the first time since 2016, we are making a small number of ProtonMail Lifetime Accounts available to support three initiatives that align closely with our mission and values.

Not only were these Lifetime ProtonMail+ accounts sorry, I mean ah… visionary, but they would be directly supporting incredible organizations.

I walked away when the counter topped two grand.

Then came another chance.

Announcing the 2020 Lifetime account auction and raffle — supporting a better internet and society

https://protonmail.com/blog/lifetime-account-auction-2020/

The Lifetime account auction begins today and will end on Dec. 27. Make sure you keep an eye on the eBay countdown!

I will admit I almost went overboard.

I almost threw the entire purchase into the raffle.

But at the last second, I stopped.

I’m only going to get one ticket and no more going nutters.

If I win, I win. If I don’t, that’s it game over.

Then I watched the Proton 2020 Lifetime Account Raffle Extraction

I was out by the first ball.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcGwG_TTKhM

Ah well. At least Protonmail raised a total of $300,000! That’s pretty amazing.

The reality of almost paying a grand for email weighed on me.

Maybe I’m crazy; who would spend that on email?

Yet, at the same time, it would be worth it.

GAME OVER.

I’m six years into this plan — time to strike it from my task manager.

But before doing so, I want to clarify the actual value of one of these accounts.

Is ProtonMail here to stay? (2017)

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments,/5mzoyk/is_protonmail_here_to_stay/

“I remember the great DDoS attack of 20,15, which kept me away from accessing my emails for a day or so. I still remember this incident and it prevents me from putting my full confidence in ProtonMail service.”

It is this comment to take note of in the replies.

“I was curious why people purchase those lifetime accounts which I understand cost over $1000. Annual subscription being $48/year, that’s well over 20 years worth of subscription. Lifetime indeed. Does not seem to be a good deal. Am I missing something?”

“Like Malcompro said, it is not an investment, it is a donation to a cause that supports privacy.”

For $48/year, you are looking at the ‘plus’ plan. Pretty sure the lifetime accounts were for ‘visionary’ level access, which is normally $288/year. Iirc with Lifetime, you’re guaranteed the highest level plan available even if a better plan comes out in the future. This balances things out a little because, in addition to supporting the service and its continued growth, you’re getting a lifetime account for the price of 4–5 years at the top level.

Wish to sell my Protonmail Lifetime account (2017)

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/750ktb/wish_to_sell_my_protonmail_lifetime_account/

Hi Everyone,

I have recently made some changes to my personal and digital life and am no longer in need of my Protonmail Lifetime account. I’m wishing to sell it to anyone that is interested in buying it. I have had it since back in March of this year, so it’s still a valid lifetime license, no tricks or anything here.

For anyone serious in buying it, please no time wasters please, send me a PM. I have reached out to ProtonMail support on my wish, so they are aware of my desire to sell. I paid full retail price for the subscription but would be open to any offers thrown my way.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks.

Yeah… I think they come close to $2000 now. And rising.

And honestly, lifetime accounts are pretty bad from a financial view-point. Initially, they were only for users who really believed in them. People that paid $997 on IndieGoGo without knowing if they will deliver something usable. They did another release on black friday 2016 because not many had a chance to get them.

You can still buy one if you want. You just have to find someone who is willing to sell their status. I would expect it to be above $2500 now. Maybe way above already.

“ProtonMail is not google. We don’t want it to be google. We want more people using it but not at the expense of running it out of business or sacrificing core features because we had to provide free features to get people onboard.”

Lifetime Account Purchase 2018

Dear all,

I’m hoping to find someone here on Reddit who is no longer in need of their ProtonMail Lifetime Account and is therefore looking to sell it. Anyone?

“I’d be alright with paying a premium, but would want to go directly through ProtonMail, who previously said they would be alright with being the middle-man for account-handovers.

How much are you willing to pay?”

‘’$2000.’’

‘’wow’’

Really? So far, I’ve only seen one user (with seemingly no intent of actually selling their account) mentioning $5000 on a previous post. Other than that, I haven’t found anyone offering north of $2000 — at least not publicly.

I’ve seen posts for $3,500 (can’t find them now, though). But once ProtonDrive comes out, I’d imagine the price of Visionary Accounts will go up. People assume that the price of PM will stay the same forever, but the reality is that as they offer more products and value, it will actually go up — especially that Visionary tier. These Lifetime accounts will only get more valuable as time progresses and demand increases for privacy (there’s only 250 total).

There’re lifetime accounts?

Yes. One-time payment visionary accounts. They were sold initially for $997 and $1337 and are resold for as high as $5000 by now. Maybe more.

I’m pretty sure only the second round of lifetime accounts are visionary. The first round were just Plus accounts ..

Maybe Visionary wasn’t available back then? They should have been upgraded when the second came out, I’m not aware of plus level lifetime accs.

- that.

How reliable is ProtonMail? 2019

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/8w0r2e/how_reliable_is_protonmail/

Currently you can get a 2-year Visionary plan for $479 using Black Friday 2017 trick. You’d need to use your $6000 purchase for 25 years for it to pay off.

I believe so much in the stability of this service I would happily buy a lifetime account should I ever find one. The last one I found I lost a bidding war to when it was at ~6,000 USD.

Both comments are in the same thread. Can you see how they are conflicting?

Visionary Lifetime Account for sale 2019

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/bimjnt/visionary_lifetime_account_for_sale/

Unfortunately, it has come time to sell my most prized possession, my Lifetime Visionary account. It’s the same account type that ProtonMail recently auctioned off (https://protonmail.com/blog/lifetime-account-auction/). Besides the auction, the last time they sold this type of account was 2016, and it doesn’t sound like they have plans to anytime soon.

“I ain’t giving you no treefiddy, you goddam Loch Ness monster!”

“Hmm they were sold last time at over $3K USD maybe if you move the decimal dot a few places to the right you can win :P”

$3K?!? That’s a prepayment of $25/Mo for 10 years. Cash is King.

$10K?, that’s even crazier! Put that money in an investment account and buy a regular monthly subscription. That is ridiculous, seriously.

“Insanity!”

What is the price?

If you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.

The last ones went for a few thousand dollars.

  • this is BS

In that case, the answer to your first question is at least $3,000. Are you going to put in a bid?

If it goes under the price of the last auctioned three accounts (roughly 11.000$), I might

Seems the fair value would be like $1,500-$2,500 or something. And that’s including the possibility you gain valuable stuff they don’t offer yet.

Want to buy a Lifetime Account (2020)

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/eca2dc/want_to_buy_a_lifetime_account/

Hello, I’m interested in buying a Lifetime ProtonMail account. I understand that there’s a charity auction going on this week, but I wanted to make this post in case anyone that has one wants to sell their own. As is normal for secondhand Lifetime account sales, I’m expecting the exchange to take place using ProtonMail support.

I think they’re pretty expensive, $ 1000’s of dollars even…

According to 2018 post (https://protonmail.com/blog/lifetime-account-auction/) 2nd accounts cost $3,500-$5,000. In 2019, it would logically cost more than this.

If I recall correctly, each lifetime account had €9,000+ bid in 2018.

“Sure. I’ll sell you mine for $20,000. If anyone is smart, they’ll notice the lifetime users aren’t ever lowering our prices. You’re only going to see these increase as we have lifetime access to the Proton suite of applications.”

This person isn’t wrong, but he’s giving false info.

“Or 10000 dollars” remarks deleted.

Anyone worried about long-term viability of the service? 2020

https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/el7ihl/anyone_worried_about_long_term_viability_of_the/

So there we have it, folks.

the true value of a Protonmail Visionary account is 13,200.00

Since the eBay listing was deleted, is no longer on eBay, and there is no verifiable information, this will become the baseline of the actual value for an account.

No more “it’s 5000, or it’s around 3–5000. Here are real hard numbers. Thirteen thousand dollars.

If you have a Visionary account, then well done.

The money that went towards that account benefited a charity and did good in this world. Moving forward, selling an account to another person Just means you are inflating their bank. Is that worth it to you and the seller? If so, then by all means for it.

As for me, I give up. I could easily top up the “Visionary” status of the account past my Lifetime, and that money would still go directly to Protonmail. I thought I had one. I waited for confirmation, chased down, and tried to find one of these elusive accounts for years.

It’s little surprise that Protonmail has never issued a statement about this. Let’s hear it straight from the horse’s mouth.

‘’ To be honest, we are not great with estimates. In general, our philosophy is to release things when they are ready and when they are up to our standards.’’

Perhaps that’s why protonmail has taken so long to deploy chat. Oh. Whoops. 🤭

But the cost of the hunt has outweighed the prize.

So if you find this looking for a visionary account, If you are willing to spend 13 thousand dollars on an email product, consider just subscribing instead.

because that’s where you will find the Real Value of a Protonmail Visionary Lifetime Account, in topping it up to support them.
